Shared resources for people working at the intersection of art, technology and social change.
Collectively we have the beginnings of a useful resource of opinions, thought and ideas around how people engage in complex projects. Come and add to that resource, tell us how you learnt your lessons, how you understand participation and what we can all do better. If you have suggestions about anything then post them up!
Supporting the development of the resources is a Case Study from a project called The Not Quite Yet, a project that asked how to include older people in the future design process of technology? It was a complex project involving research, community groups, artists commissions, community liaison leading to an exhibition. Evaluative material is shown here as a framework to begin discussing some of the issues.
Creating shared resources
The places where art, technology and participation meet are already remarkable for their creative diversity and bespoke working practices. co-pilot seeks to cultivate these trends further, and open up more space for sharing and exploring frameworks, methodologies and experiences.

I’ve been working in arts participation throughout my professional life - which is beginning to amount to just a little longer than I can remember - and, especially when I consider the gains made since the early nineties, I see enormous value in the increasing prevalence and centrality of arts participation, of all stripes, in classrooms and at the heart of artist/creative organisation delivery across the UK. Yet, while celebrating its apparent rude health, I’ve long been concerned about the lack of critical reflection within the field; the understanding of political context, and the knowledge that we’re still a way off from being able to have unguarded, honest, warts-and-all exchanges, between ‘ourselves’ and beyond, that we need to in order to see clear, truly value in what participation in the arts can achieve. › Continue reading

If you would like to write a more structured post or become an invited contributor please get in touch at pilot[at]co-pilot.net
First up we have Tim Jones who explores how the participatory art world sometimes avoids honest self-reflection. Tim is the Director of Solar Associates. He’s worked in the arts for over 15 years as a producer, stage director, consultant, facilitator, fundraiser, event programmer and teacher.
We also have Melissa Bliss who will add her anecdotal thougths on defining success and failure. Melissa is an artist based in London. She has a long history of social engagement with technology and her work is often collaborative. She has worked with young people for several years using mobile phones to make videos, take photographs and record sound. Her work can be found at livingcinema.org.
She is also a director of Living Cinema, an independent film company which makes unusual documentaries [livingcinema.com].
